WNBA: Fever Fall 0-2 Vs Liberty
Updated: May 25, 2021
The Indiana Fever hosted the New York Liberty in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. This matchup marks the 1st regular season game hosted in Bankers Life since 2019. Kelsey Mitchell, Tiffany Mitchell & Danielle Robinson led the Fever each scoring over 10+ points in the Fever's 65-73 Loss vs the New York Liberty on Sunday. Kelsey Mitchell scored 16 points while Tiffany Mitchell & Danielle Robinson both dropped 13 & 12 points.
The Fever finished the first half trailing 41-35 with Kelsey & Tiffany Mitchell leading the Fever back into the game after suffering a 22 point deficit before Halftime. The Liberty's 36% Point Shooting combined with lack of Perimeter defense kept the Fever from securing the lead throughout the entire game.
Ultimately, the New York Liberty had the consistent offensive threat to keep the Fever fighting to catch up the entire game. Former Fever Small Forward Betnijah Laney led the team in scoring with 20 points. Guard Sabrina Ionescu also contributed with 12 points, 5 Rebounds & 4 Assists.
Overall, I witnessed a lapse in smart shot selection within today's multiple rotations of the Indiana Fever Roster. Head Coach Marianne Stanley has to capitalize on the young spirit of this team which is what kept the Fever close after coming back from a potential 22 point blowout near the end of the 2nd Quarter. The Fever put together a total of 40 Team Rebounds & 15 Team Assists. However, I'm a little concerned with the 21 Team Turnovers & 24 Personal Fouls. Officiating wasn't the greatest in my opinion, but elite players have to overcome the challenges to secure the W. As I previously mentioned during the Pre-season victory vs. The Chicago Sky, If the Indiana Fever doesn't improve shot selection & minimize turnovers, they will most likely fight hard but come up short against true Title Contending Rosters.
